Exploded view of the FURobot robotic brick construction system

Overview

The FURobot robotic brick-construction system brings a new expressive effect and intelligent production method to traditional bricklaying. A six-axis ABB robot works with conveyor-belt feeding — bricks with large height errors are flagged by sensors — while feeding, pumping and applying mortar are integrated in one end effector, its nozzle swapped per required mortar-layer thickness. The tool head is custom-designed around the brick modulus and connects to the six-axis flange. The robot serves both on-site mobile bricklaying and factory prefabrication, and the FURobot platform in Grasshopper compiles programs and robot models into masonry files for the ROBOT CORE. The technical achievement was appraised by academicians and experts as reaching international advanced level.

Prefabrication process: conveyor, mortar machine and robot arm

Methodology

  • Grasshopper-based FURobot platform: program and robot model compiled to masonry files
  • Factory prefabrication with 24/7 equipment plus ground-mobile bricklaying robots on site
  • Brick patching to eliminate errors between field conditions and the digital model
